Strategies for a successful extended family session

Photography
Kandace

Extended family portrait sessions are a wonderful way to create lasting memories that can be cherished for generations. They are incredibly rewarding, but if I’m being honest they can always be pretty challenging for all parties. I want to capture the true essence of your family and that requires careful planning and a bit of creativity. .

coordinating outfits

For most families, it’s hard enough to get all of your relatives in one location at once. It can be even more difficult to coordinate photo opts. It’s worth it to get dressed up and put extra effort into your wardrobe to ensure your outfits are cohesive for this rare photo moment. I personally like the idea of providing a color palette or theme.

Earth tones, pastels, or even seasonal colors can work well. Here are examples of color palettes for photo sessions. As you can see, this family chose to wear spring colors for their morning Smoky Mountain session at Foothills Parkway.

capture the kiddos first

Though extended family sessions are typically closer to 40 minutes long, your children will likely lose interest in taking pictures within the first 10 to 15 minutes. It’s important to prioritize photos with children first, then capture adult groups, couples, etc.

don't skip the photo list
Although it’s not required, I strongly recommend sending me a list of your relatives’ names and relationships.
For example:
Grandparents – Kayla & Tim
Family 1 – Corey, Amelia (parents), Cassie & Tate (children)
Family 2 – Troy, Monica
From there, I’ll be happy to come up with a photo list for you!

less is more

When trying to get your child(rens) attention for the photographer, being less vocal is often more effective than multiple people attempting to get their attention all at once. While I totally understand your efforts, when kids are on the receiving end of too many voices it can make the photo process extremely overwhelming. My advice is to designate 1-2 people who can work behind the camera to make the little ones smile!

details are important

In most cases, this is my first time meeting you. I’m not going to understand family dynamics, I’m unaware of behaviors or health issues, I don’t know which children belong to which parents. This is all useful information to disclose to me before our session!

It’s helpful to know if anyone has underlying health conditions that may hinder them. For example, if your relative has recently had surgery on their lower body that they’re recovering from I may suggest a location that requires little walking.

things happen

No matter how much we plan for your session, things happen. Remember the reason why we’re here – to capture so many of the people you love all in one place. It’s okay if the session isn’t perfect. It’s alright if your kids are cranky.

Make the most of your time together while you have it!

in conclusion

Extended family portrait sessions are a wonderful way to create lasting memories that can be cherished for generations. By planning ahead and organizing the session efficiently, we can make this a more enjoyable experience for everyone involved!
