First of all—if you’re here in the Smokies with your family, welcome! Whether you’re squeezing in a weekend getaway or planning a big ol’ family vacation, I’m so glad you’re making space for photos while you’re here. These mountains are pure magic, and capturing memories in this dreamy backdrop? 10/10 recommend.
Now, let’s talk about what it’s really like showing up for a portrait session with kids—especially after traveling. You’re in a new time zone. Everyone’s sleep schedule is a little meh. The weather may or may not be playing games. And you’re wondering if your toddler will agree to wear actual shoes.
You’re not alone. As a Smoky Mountain photographer who works with tons of families visiting from out of state, I totally get it. So here are 5 super helpful tips to make your session feel less like a chore—and more like a sweet, relaxed part of your trip:
Real talk? The best moments aren’t posed—they’re the ones where your kids are being themselves. So if someone’s feeling a little wiggly or shy? Totally fine. If your baby wants to be held the entire time? Let’s go with it. I’ll gently guide you through the session, but the real magic happens when you let go of the pressure and just enjoy the time together.
New place, new routine, new faces. That’s a lot for little people. So don’t worry if they need a few minutes to warm up! We’ll ease in slowly—play a little, explore a bit, and let them lead the way at first. My goal isn’t just to take great photos—it’s to create a relaxed space where your kids can be exactly who they are.
Bring the snacks. All the snacks. And water, wipes, maybe even a favorite toy or two. A tiny backpack of their go-to comforts can go a long way. And if they need a lollipop halfway through the session? No judgment here. I’ve seen candy miracles, y’all. 😂
If your kiddo usually does best in the morning but now you’re in a different time zone—let’s chat before your session and adjust accordingly. I always recommend planning your session around your child’s best window of energy. We want them happy(ish), fed, and rested-ish… not melting down on the side of a mountain.
Mountain weather is sneaky. One minute it’s breezy and cool, the next you’re sweating under a cloudy sky. Layers are your best friend! And when it comes to kids’ outfits—go comfy over complicated. If they hate the shoes, don’t force ’em. Barefoot in the grass? Always a vibe.
At the end of the day, this isn’t about picture-perfect poses or everyone smiling at the same time. It’s about your people, loving on each other, in one of the most beautiful places ever. And as your Smoky Mountain family photographer, I’m just here to help you hold onto those moments—messy, magical, and full of love.
