As your local Smoky Mountain family photographer, I totally get the excitement families feel when exploring this beautiful place. There are so many attractions and adventures to embark on! If I came here when I was a kid, the last thing I’d want to do is dress up in my “nice clothes” and sit still for a portrait session.
Portrait sessions can be a little overwhelming at times for both parents and children. I’m here to share one way I try to keep everyone in the best spirits!
I always recommend a mini session to my clients with younger children, which takes less than 30 minutes. The truth is, most kids only have a good 10-15 minutes of attentiveness in them before they’re totally over taking portraits.
I’ve learned the best way to get the most out of your children during this short time frame is by balancing traditional poses with breaks or prompts that allow them to act more natural.
During a break, your child may want to snuggle or enjoy their favorite snack. If your children have a ton of energy, I may prompt them to run around a little bit. Whichever the approach may for the day, these scenarios are a great opportunity to capture amazing candids of your child. I also find that it helps your relax during the photo session process.
“From the very beginning Kandace was exceptional to work with. She is very responsive and provides you with all the information you need, even the details! She was also very accommodating by looking ahead at the weather and creating a back up plan. On the day of, she was so sweet and was great with our two boys. Our pictures are absolutely gorgeous and I am so happy we found KLY!”
I know how badly you want your children to be on their best behavior and cooperate. No matter how hard we try, sometimes our little ones aren’t going to be in the mood to take photos. That doesn’t mean the session is a waste! You know better than anyone how quickly your child is growing up. Memories with them are always worth capturing, even if they’re not exactly how you pictured them. Prepare them before the session to the best of your abilities, gently redirect them as needed and don’t forget to enjoy the process!
