In the past, I’ve been one to cram a few different oils in a small container with a large scoop of shea butter and hand mix it with a fork, but this time I tried a new method that made the consistency and blend much better, and left the overall product looking much more presentable. The method of making this hair cream will not be the focus of today’s post; for me, it’s more important to understand what items you’re using and how they can benefit you.
What Did You Use & Why?
For those of you who don’t know, homemade hair creams like this one can often be used for skin care as well. That’s one more reason to make your own products at home. I used two butters and several oils for this time around. Here are my reasons why:
Shea Butter – I’ve used raw shea butter on my skin and hair for years because it has sooo many benefits. It helps my hair hold moisture like no other product and it does not cause much build up. I’ve made hair creams using shea butter for the last 3 years, and I’ve never had to switch up moisturizers like I’ve been forced to in the past with store bought products. Shea butter can also be used as a skin moisturizer and has healing qualities the can help you fade away scars and stretch marks.
Cocoa Butter – I used a tiny amount of cocoa butter this time around. Although it has great benefits and can serve as an amazing moisturizer, my main reason for adding a small amount was to give the hair cream a more pleasant scent. For whatever reason, I find that people love to take a whiff of my hair when giving hugs or even standing next to me. (Weird right? lol) Although no one has said my hair has a bad odor, I’ll now feel more at ease when people take a quick sniff after adding a hint of this butter.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil – EVOO is my old faithful oil. It was the first oil I ever attempted to use in my homemade products and it’s done me a lot of good. I actually used to use evoo on it’s own as a replacement for lotion; the dorms & apartments I lived in during college had the WORST water for both drinking and skin. It would always leave my skin as white as snow and extremely dry. I found this oil was amazing at combatting this dryness and did a great job of keeping my skin looking moisturized year round. Extra virgin olive oil is also excellent for moisturizing hair and leaves my hair super shiny and soft.
Castor Oil – I made a whole video about how castor oil helped save my edges and thicken my hair. You can watch that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_CZR_k1amI It’s done a great job of keeping my hair in good health and I do believe it’s helped keep it thicker and stronger.
Coconut Oil – Surprisingly, I just got into coconut oil last year….and I’ve been in love since then! This oil adds such a nice shine and softness to my hair. I love the bounce it adds to my hair every time I use it. Outside of being great at sealing in moisture, coconut oil helps with hair growth and can help keep your scalp in good health.
Tea Tree Oil – I’ve always added a tiny bit of castor oil to my hair products because it helps with dryness and itchiness. Side note: Did you know tea tree oil is also a natural remedy for ear infections? Although I wouldn’t strongly recommend this to anyone (because I don’t want to be responsible for a more serious trip to the hospital), I haven’t been to the doctor for an ear ache in at least a few years. Anytime I start to feel pain in my ear, I put a couple drops in and the oil immediately soothes the pain. I do this every 4 to 6 hours for a few days until the pain gradually goes away completely!
Vitamin E – Helps to stimulate hair growth and strengthen your hair. You will find it in many hair and skin products because it’s so great for your body!
Final Thoughts
I’m already in love with my new hair cream! It’s left my hair feeling super soft, shiny and moisturized. In addition, it doesn’t cause much build up and my hair appears to have more volume when I use it.
I’ve shared a few of my tips and thoughts behind making this product, but I encouraged you all to have fun researching your own ingredients and methods for making your own hair creams. Assess your needs and allow that to help you with the process!
