My husband and I finally made our way to Grotto Falls for our first hike of the summer!
This hike is approximately 2.6 miles round trip and took us less than 2 hours to complete. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a beginner hiker while my husband has a variety of hiking experiences through his years of work in the National Park Service.
We both felt the difficulty level of this hike was moderate.
We arrived at 7:30a for closer parking and minimal foot traffic at Grotto Falls.
“Is it worth it?”
That’s the most frequent question we’re typically asked while making our way back down the trail. In my opinion, it absolutely is! The 25 foot waterfall is really pretty and even the areas leading up to the fall are beautiful. If you’re someone who loves taking photos as much as I do, I’m sure it’ll be hard for you to put your camera down. There’s also a path for your to walk behind the waterfall! You can stop there for a quick photo opt or continue on the trail towards Mt. Le Conte Summit after this point.
Be prepared for a bit of an incline on the way up. During the first half of the hike up we worked up a sweat, but the trail seemed to get easier the closer we got to Grotto Falls. We found the trip down to be a breeze.
For those who have a fear of heights like me, this may be a good trail to challenge yourself! Although you can tell you’re pretty high at some points, the walking paths are wide and there was never a moment that I felt scared.
Laurel Falls used to be one of my most recommended trails, but Grotto is definitely taking that place! Just remember to go early to be the crowds!
Parking passes are required within GSMNP. Don’t forget to stop by Sugarlands Visitor Center for a day pass ($5).
Prepare for an unplugged experience! Although there were a few areas I had low signal, there’s generally no service in the mountains. Enjoy your time out in nature!
Please do not leave any trash or food on the trails. It can harm or attract wildlife on the trails. Let’s do our part to keep everyone and the environment safe!
There is very limited parking in the area! We arrived around 7:30a to ensure we got a spot right off of the trail. There is addition parking as you drive further along, but the incline heading back to the trail does not look easy.
Please leave your fury friends at home. This trail is not appropriate for animals.
Drink plenty of water before your hike and bring an extra bottle to carry with you!
Comfortable footwear is so important. Break your shoes in beforehand. Closed toe shoes are also recommended.
The conditions in the mountains may differ from ground level. Check the forecast and dress accordingly!
Hiking can be challenging for beginners, but it’s extremely rewarding when you’ve made it to the finish line at the end. Take your time and enjoy the journey!
Hi friends, I’m Kandace!
I’m a Kansas City gal who relocated to East TN in 2022.
I’ve specialized in weddings, branding and lifestyle portrait photography since I began my career nearly a decade ago.
After spending the last year exploring the mountains and documenting memories with my fiancé, I became a licensed Great Smoky Mountain National Park photographer so I can capture locals and travelers who want to photograph their time in Smokies just like us.
