Extended Family Smoky Mountain Portraits

One of the reasons I love photographing extended family sessions at Foothills Parkway is that no two evenings ever look quite the same. Sometimes we get those dreamy mountain sunsets, and sometimes Mother Nature has other plans!

After a couple weeks of rainy weather, we decided to start this session a little earlier than I normally would. It was definitely brighter than my usual shooting conditions, but this family showed up with the best attitudes and made the absolute most of it. Honestly, that’s what makes the biggest difference every single time.

Rainy weather can be stressful when you’re planning family photos, but I’ve learned there’s not much value in worrying about the things we can’t control. As I thanked this family for being flexible with the timing, they smiled and said, “No, thank you! Flexibility works both ways.” That simple comment meant so much to me and was such a good reminder that we’re all on the same team.

And if I’m looking for a silver lining, all that rain left the Smokies looking extra green, lush, and beautiful. The mountains were absolutely showing off that evening. Sessions like this are a great reminder that sometimes the conditions aren’t perfect, but the memories, laughter, and time spent together are what matter most.

It’s days like this that make me feel incredibly thankful to be one of the many Gatlinburg photographers who gets to spend their evenings with wonderful families in such a beautiful corner of the Smoky Mountains.
