So you know who you’re dealing with – I have asthma, I’m terrified of heights and as a woman from flat Kansas City, Missouri, exploring the Great Smoky Mountains of East TN has been a totally new and surreal experience for me.
I’ve never considered myself to be outdoorsy or brave enough to hike in the mountains. However, after completing my first rounds of hikes in 2022 I can honestly say it’s something everyone should experience.
Laurel Falls is easily one of my favorite trails to recommend to travelers!
Unlike other trails I’ve experienced in the Smokies, Laurel Falls is mostly paved. You won’t find perfectly cemented sidewalks here due to foot traffic and natural weathering, but it certainly does the trick. The trail appears to be pretty wide in comparison to others. Especially during busier seasons in the National Park, it’s helpful to feel you can maneuver comfortably.
I personally feel that one of the biggest payoffs of hiking at Laurel Falls is that the reward in the end feels worth it. The 80 foot waterfall is a beautiful sight and the perfect backdrop for photo ops. You may work up a sweat while getting up there, but it’s t0tally doable if you take your time.
Parents: I have seen children hike this trail but please be mindful that there are no guard rails. If this is a safety concern, you may want to try Cataract Falls (behind Sugarlands Visitor Center) for a more family friendly experience.
Distance: 2.6 miles total (round trip)
Completion time: Less than 2 hours
Waterfall
Nice view
Paved walkways (mostly)
The trail is slippery when wet
If you struggle with heights, it does get a little more challenging closer to the waterfall. Take your time along the wall and you’ll be fine!
Drink plenty of water before your hike and bring an extra bottle to carry with you!
Comfortable footwear is so important. Break your shoes in beforehand. Closed toe shoes are also recommended.
The conditions in the mountains may differ from ground level. Check the forecast and dress accordingly!
There are no restrooms on the trail. Stop at Sugarlands Visitor Center before heading up the mountain!
Please leave your fury friends at home. This trail is not appropriate for animals.
Be aware that parking is limited. Arrive first thing in the morning or prepare to hike 1/2 a mile or more to get to the trail.
Parking passes are required within GSMNP. Don’t forget to stop by Sugarlands Visitor Center for a day pass ($5).
Prepare for an unplugged experience. There’s no service in the mountains. Enjoy your time out in nature!
Please do not leave any trash or food on the trails. It can harm or attract wildlife on the trails. Let’s do our part to keep everyone and the environment safe!
Hiking can be challenging for beginners, but it’s extremely rewarding when you’ve made it to the finish line at the end. Take your time and enjoy the journey!
Hi friends, I’m Kandace!
I’m a Kansas City gal who relocated to East TN in 2022.
I’ve specialized in weddings, branding and lifestyle portrait photography since I began my career nearly a decade ago.
After spending the last year exploring the mountains and documenting memories with my fiancé, I became a licensed Great Smoky Mountain National Park photographer so I can capture locals and travelers who want to photograph their time in Smokies just like us.
