Last week, I had the absolute joy of photographing an extended family session in the Smoky Mountains. Even though it was slightly overcast, soft light peeked through just enough to create that magical, gentle glow we photographers love. There’s something about the calm of a morning session that makes these moments feel extra special…everyone’s relaxed, the air is crisp, and the scenery is at its most peaceful.
One of the things I love about morning sessions, especially as we transition into cooler seasons, is how refreshing the temperatures are. Early mornings are much cooler than the afternoons, which makes it easier for kids (and adults!) to stay comfortable during a session. Plus, morning light in the Smoky Mountains is soft and flattering, especially on slightly overcast days. That gentle light gives every image a dreamy, authentic feel.
Morning temps can be surprisingly crisp, even if the afternoon warms up. Layering makes it easy to stay comfortable, and it gives your photos added texture and visual interest.
Slightly overcast skies are a photographer’s dream for family sessions—they diffuse light evenly and reduce harsh shadows. But if the sun peeks through (like it did during our session), it creates those magical little highlights that make photos pop.
Scarves, hats, or even a cozy blanket can make the session feel playful and seasonal while keeping everyone warm. These little touches also add personality to your photos.
Early mornings are ideal for families because everyone is usually fresh, energized, and ready to enjoy the session. Plus, you get those gorgeous, soft morning tones in your images.
My favorite moments are the genuine ones—the tickle fights, shared laughter, and spontaneous hugs. The cooler mornings help everyone stay energized, which means more smiles, more movement, and more authentic memories captured.
The Smokies offer a beautiful, ever-changing backdrop for family photos. From the rolling fog in the valleys to the colorful leaves in fall, every season brings its own magic. Morning sessions let you enjoy that magic when the trails are quiet, the air is crisp, and your family’s connection is the focus.
I can’t wait to share the images from this session. They perfectly capture the laughter, warmth, and love of this family while highlighting the soft, glowing light that makes Smoky Mountain photography so special.
