My husband and I decided to take on the Brushy Mountain Trail and let me just say…this one humbled me.
We hiked 7.35 miles and it took us about 6.5 hours total, including breaks, lunch and a little bit of exploring along the way.
I would consider the difficulty of this trail to be challenging. Honestly, it’s been the most difficult hike I’ve done so far.
Getting to pass by Grotto Falls again was definitely a highlight of this hike. While the nature scenery is always peaceful and serene, there aren’t many views along the way of this hike otherwise. That’s not to say it’s not worth the trip at all! That said, I’m going to be real with you…this is probably a one-and-done hike for me. 😂
I actually joked on the way back that I’m so glad I experienced it and took photos because I will likely never see those views again.
On the brighter side, there’s something really rewarding about pushing through a hike like this. It’s tough in the moment, but you leave feeling accomplished…like okay, I really did that.
If you’re looking for a more relaxed hike with a big payoff, I’d personally recommend just stopping at Grotto Falls instead. It’s one of my favorites in the park and definitely one I’d go back and do again (and again). Your can find my Grotto Falls Hiking Experience on the blog as well.
As for Brushy Mountain…we had our moment. And I’m at peace with leaving it right there!
There is very limited parking in the area! We arrived around 6:30a to ensure we got a spot right off of the trail. There is addition parking as you drive further along, but the incline heading back to the trail does not look easy.
Plenty of water, snacks, medication, first aid kit, sun protection and more are all great things to pack for your journey!
Please do not leave any trash or food on the trails. It can harm or attract wildlife on the trails. Let’s do our part to keep everyone and the environment safe!
Parking passes are required within GSMNP. Don’t forget to stop by Sugarlands Visitor Center for a day pass ($5).
Comfortable footwear is so important. Break your shoes in beforehand. Closed toe shoes are also recommended.
