My husband and I loved our first experience hiking to Andrews Bald during November 2022, so we made our way back to the trail to experience the flame azaleas this spring!
This hike is 3.6 miles round trip and took us just over 2 hours to complete.
I would consider the difficulty of this trail to be moderate. I was mentally prepared for the inclines this time around which helped with pacing, but I definitely had to take a few breathers during our journey.
While I don’t know if I’d recommend this trail to first time hikers, I definitely think it’s an experience everyone should have at some point.
The views at Andrews Bald are really amazing! This bald is one of the few remaining in the park and it truly feels serene up there. The open grassy meadow that marks your final destination at the top is extremely peaceful and offers many unique views of the Smokies.
We brought a small lunch to recharge and I even managed to take a brief nap before we started our journey back! While hiking can be tiring in moments, I left feeling rejuvenated in a sense.
If you have the energy after, hike up to Clingmans Dome – the highest point in Tennessee and Great Smoky Mountains National Park! You can see seven states from this observation tower!
I recommend a solid pair of hiking boots for this trail. Though it’s maintained pretty well, the trail can be rocky and uneven in places.
Even on a warm spring day, this area was 15 degrees colder than what it felt like at lower elevations. I definitely recommend layers for this hike.
Plenty of water, snacks, medication, first aid kit, sun protection and more are all great things to pack for your journey!
Please do not leave any trash or food on the trails. It can harm or attract wildlife on the trails. Let’s do our part to keep everyone and the environment safe!
Please leave your fury friends at home. This trail is not appropriate for animals.
Prepare for an unplugged experience because there’s no reception here! Enjoy your time out in nature!
Parking passes are required within GSMNP. Clingmans Dome has a kiosk for your convenience ($5)
