There’s just something about the Smoky Mountains in springtime that feels like a deep breath and a fresh start. The wildflowers start peeking through, the air is warm but crisp, and the views? Absolutely unmatched. Hannah & Ryan picked the perfect time for a weekend road trip to celebrate their 2-year anniversary—and I was lucky enough to capture their love story right along Foothills Parkway, just before sunset.

Hannah & Ryan took a roadtrip, looking for a quiet escape to reset, reconnect, and celebrate year two of marriage. Their timing couldn’t have been better! With the Rod Run crowds clearing out and most spring break families heading home, Gatlinburg was noticeably quieter. It felt like the mountains were just for us.
We met up on Foothills Parkway during golden hour, and oh my goodness—the lighting, the layers of mountain views, the wind softly tousling Hannah’s hair… it was all giving romance novel cover meets effortless joy.
Even though it was a little breezy, it honestly added to the whole vibe. They danced, they laughed, they snuggled up close to keep warm. It felt like watching a love story unfold in real time, and every frame told a little piece of it.
Why Foothills Parkway Is a Dream for Couples Sessions
If you’re dreaming of portraits that feel peaceful, scenic, and a little bit adventurous, Foothills Parkway is one of my favorite hidden gems as a Smoky Mountain photographer. It offers panoramic views without the heavy foot traffic of the more well-known spots in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Plus, during spring and fall, the colors are next level.
The best part? It’s super accessible, which makes it ideal for couples who want beautiful views without a major hike (though I’m always down for an epic hike session too!).
Tips for Planning Your Smoky Mountain Portrait Session
If you and your love are thinking of planning a session here (or even just visiting the Smokies!), here are a few tips:
Visit in the “in-between” seasons – Early spring (like late March to mid-April) or mid-September are some of the best times to visit. You’ll beat the major crowds and still get incredible weather.
Check for local events – Gatlinburg hosts several car shows, festivals, and events that can pack the town. Try to come right before or after them for a more peaceful experience.
Sunset sessions = yes please! – Especially in the mountains, that golden light will glow. I’ll help pick the best time depending on your location and season!
